I contributed to a recent about.com article about modern day budgeting for mom’s (http://stayathomemoms.about.com/od/budget/a/htbudget.htm). The challenge as I see it in our consumer product centered culture is that we increasingly focus on cutting coupons as a way to cut back. This isn’t a novel concept but it still mystifies me why people shop at Costco or use coupons to save on bulk items when they are trying to save money. Spending $350 at Costco isn’t cutting back. Figuring out how to spend that amount over a month in fresh produce so that you aren’t eating Hot Pockets for the next month is smart buying. A friend of mine recently reminded me of the concept of buying better food that is more expensive but buying less of it. I swear by this. We simply do not need to buy as much food as we think we do if we eat real healthy food. I have attached a link to a great article from the LA Times posted on the value of eating “real” food.
