My biggest saver was using the libraries inter-library loan system. All of the libraries in the state are connected and 75% of the time the book you need is available for FREE. Just ask a librarian or search inter-library loan on your libraries website. I saved $1000s due to this one tip. Please use it! The campus bookstores screw you twice. They charge too much for the books initially, and then they give you very little back when you sell to them. And at the end of the semester you can use them to search for resellers to sell your book to. All the search results are organized by price so you can buy your books for the lowest prices and sell them back for the highest. They put the prices side by side, and made it easy for me to choose. It makes sense for me to rent some books and buy others. This term, I rented two books and bought three in the same order.
